Just as God revealed the way through which the Israelites could approach Him, so He has revealed a way by which we can approach Him. When Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, this way was opened. Hebrews 10:19,20 says, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.” Through what Jesus Christ accomplished in His physical body on the cross, the way of access to God has been opened to all believers. Previously, the veil of the temple had kept the people away from the presence of God, but through His death Jesus Christ made access available to all.

In the case of the Israelites, death would come to anyone who even touched the mountain on which God revealed Himself. Such instructions emphasized the holiness of God to the people. Then they were really awed on the third day, for “there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice” (Ex. 19:16-19).

The people were not to approach God until He revealed the way, and then they had to come in precisely that way. The people trembled, and it is certainly easy to understand why they were afraid of God, who is absolutely holy and who was giving instructions to them through Moses.

But notice God’s purpose in all of this. Moses told the people, “Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not” (20:20). In the light of all that happened at Mount Sinai, it is strange that some people today think they can come to God in any way they want. The way into God’s presence has been made possible through the shedding of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. But some deny the effectiveness of Chnst s shed blood and yet think that they can come into the presence ot

God. Were it not for the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, we would all remain in sin, for Hebrews 9:22 says, “Almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission [forgiveness].” That more people do not die at the hands of God because of their blasphemous ideas is only because of the longsuffering and mercy of God.
